It’s Padawan Abhi Sunwalker here, and today, I’m excited to share with you my latest galactic adventure: building my very own home server. Join me as I recount my journey through the construction of this technological marvel, from the hardware components to the software configurations, all the while embracing the spirit of Star Wars.

The Home Server: A Starship in the Making

Like a Jedi constructing their lightsaber, I’ve chosen each component of my home server carefully to suit my needs. Here’s a look at the hardware behind this powerful machine:

  1. CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 3600, providing the hyperdrive-like processing power needed to run multiple applications and virtual machines.
  2. RAM: 16 GB of 3200 MHz memory, offering smooth performance akin to the Force flowing through a Jedi Master.
  3. Storage: A combination of a 1 TB SSD for quick access times and a 24 TB Seagate Exos HDD for massive storage capacity, ensuring I have ample space for all my digital treasures. Additionally, I’ve repurposed old 2 TB HDDs as backup drives for extra redundancy.
  4. GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660, providing the graphical prowess needed for my gaming and media streaming endeavors.
  5. Motherboard: A Mini-ITX motherboard, offering a compact yet powerful command center for my server.
  6. Case: Fractal Design Node 304, chosen for its compact size and usability, much like the Millennium Falcon’s deceivingly powerful capabilities.

Software Configuration: A Symphony of the Force

With the hardware in place, I’ve turned to the software side of the Force, configuring a versatile and powerful system that caters to my needs and those of my family:

  1. Windows Server: Serving as the backbone of my system, providing a familiar environment for hosting Plex and Steam remote gaming.
  2. Plex Media Server: Transforming my home server into a personal entertainment hub, allowing me to stream movies, TV shows, and music to any device on my network, just like beaming transmissions through the HoloNet.
  3. TrueNAS on Hyper-V: A virtualized solution for secure and efficient data storage and management, ensuring my data remains protected like the secrets of the Jedi Order.
  4. Debian on Hyper-V: Another virtual machine, dedicated to running Pi-hole, a network-wide ad blocker that keeps my browsing experience as peaceful as the serene landscapes of Naboo.
  5. Remote Access: Enabled for my family members, allowing them to benefit from the power of my home server, even on their outdated laptops.

Exploring the Galaxy of Possibilities

With this home server build, the galaxy is truly at my fingertips. But the possibilities don’t stop there! Here are a few more ideas for potential home server applications:

  1. Home Automation Hub: Integrating smart home devices for a seamless and connected living experience, much like the advanced technology found on Coruscant.
  2. Personal VPN Server: Ensuring privacy and security while browsing the web, as stealthy as a Jedi cloaked in the shadows.
  3. Private Git Server: Hosting code repositories for personal projects or collaborations, fueling the creative genius of Rebel engineers.
  4. Network Monitoring: Keeping a watchful eye on network traffic and performance, like a vigilant Jedi Knight guarding the peace.

A New Beginning: Where to Start Your Home Server Journey
